Trust through clarity

How we turn submitted prices into useful context.

HVAC Estimators is an early-stage community database. This page explains what the numbers mean, what they do not mean, and how to use them responsibly.

    Show the sample

A price statistic without its sample size is easy to misread. Search displays the records it found so you can judge the evidence yourself.

    Keep geography visible

Results match the requested ZIP first and can include the surrounding three-digit ZIP area. Broader state context is shown only as fallback context.

    Label the source

Records are identified as homeowner- or contractor-submitted. A source label does not mean the amount was independently audited.

    Compare like with like

System type, capacity, efficiency, brand, ductwork, electrical work, permits, and warranty scope can all move the installed price.

    What happens to a submission

    1. 1

      Collection

A homeowner or contractor enters a completed project price and any available equipment, labor, material, efficiency, and location details.

    2. 2

      Basic validation

Required fields and formats are checked when the record is submitted. This reduces input errors but does not prove that an invoice or amount is authentic.

    3. 3

      Public display

Personal contact details are not displayed with public price records. ZIP codes are partially masked in recent-activity views.

    4. 4

      Search and summaries

Search returns exact ZIP and same three-digit ZIP-area records. Summary figures are calculated from the matching records after the selected filters are applied.

    Important limitations

    • Community submissions are not independently verified or statistically representative of every market.
    • Small samples can be skewed by unusual homes, premium equipment, incomplete scope, or data-entry mistakes.
    • An average combines unlike projects unless you narrow the filters. The median and individual records can be more informative.
    • Ember produces an educational planning estimate. It cannot inspect a home, perform a Manual J load calculation, or issue a contractor quote.

    How to use the numbers

Check the number of matching records and how far they are from your ZIP.

Match equipment capacity, efficiency, project type, and included work before comparing totals.

Collect at least three itemized written quotes from licensed, insured contractors.

    Corrections and feedback

If a public result appears incorrect or this methodology is unclear, send the record details through our contact page. We review product and data-quality feedback as the platform grows.
